12-year-old found dead in Makunudhoo lagoon

The body of a 12-year-old boy was found dead in the lagoon near the harbor area of Haa Dhaalu atoll Makunudhoo on Tuesday.

The Island Chief of Makunudhoo, Mohamed Ahmed, said on Wednesday that Thahseen Abdul Aleem’s body was discovered by the crew of a fishing vessel from Shaviyani atoll Kanditheemu that was leaving the island.

The Island Chief said that the doctors at the island’s Health Centre had said that Aleem had died around one and half hours before he had been brought to the Health Centre.

“Aleem put on a diving mask and gone swimming with some other kids that morning,” he said. “The doctor said that Aleem had died after having an epileptic fit. There was froth inside the snorkel the boy had been using.”

He said that Aleem, who was studying in Grade 6 of the island school, had a history of getting fits. Aleem knew how to swim and he usually went swimming with other kids his age every day, Mohamed Ahmed said.
