Some doctors working for the ADK Hospital have resigned due to harassment and intimidation from the public, the management of the ADK Hospital has said.
The Managing Director of ADK Hospital Ahmed Affaal said that some other doctors had also complained about similar problems and that during the last two weeks two doctors had resigned.
“The problem isn’t unique to this hospital,” Affaal further said.
Among the doctors that have resigned from the Hospital were two OB/GYN surgeons, and a pediatrician that had joined the Hospital very recently. Due to the resignation of the two OB/GYN surgeons, the Hospital has stopped admitting and providing services to pregnant women. However, the Hospital has hired the services of a substitute OB/GYN surgeon temporarily to oversee the section.
“We are discussing the matter with the Government also,” Affaal said.
When asked about specifics about the dangers the doctors were facing, Affaal declined to go into details but said that there were “lots of problems”.
“There are several issues being faced by various people,” he said. “Doctors are being given the proper respect, and some are openly threatening violence against the doctors so some of the doctors are afraid of working for ADK. This situation is faced by doctors all over Maldives. Due to this we are actually having difficulty finding doctors who are willing to work here.”
Similar complaints are being received from doctors and other medical working at the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital and some hospitals and health centres in the islands all over Maldives.
