Ukulhas residents close down Island Office, Court, School

The residents of North Ari atoll Ukulhas have closed down the Island Office, Court and the Island School, claiming that the places were not giving acceptable levels of service.

A resident from the island said on Wednesday that the youth of the island had got together and closed down the places because the management of the places had become so slack that the level of service provided there had become unacceptable.

According to the resident even the simplest request to the Island Office would take one or two years to be completed.

“It takes two years to get a registry for a child,” he said. “In addition, because of the senior people at the Island Office the privately funded powerhouse is going bankrupt. Last month alone the powerhouse has incurred Rf20,000 in damages.”

He said that when they had requested the Island Office to change the rate charged by the powerhouse for a unit of electricity to be lowered Rf3 from Rf4, they had brought it down to Rf2.

“Because of their spitefulness the powerhouse is now operating at a loss,” he said.

He further said that the School had been closed down and the students sent home because the school management was doing a very poor job and the conduct of the students had reached appalling levels.

He said that creating ‘bombs’ by mixing acid and aluminum foils inside bottles, and sexually harassing female students had become commonplace inside the school.

“The school management says that there is nothing they can do about it,” he said.
