Maafushi Inmates Go on Hunger-Strike Again

Miadhu News has learnt that the detainees at Maafushi Jail have again gone on a hunger-strike.

The Maafushi Jail detainees are said to have begun the protest yesterday morning, and 95% of inmates are now believed to be taking part in the protest.

An inmate said that "we are forced to do this again, because we don't see any action by the government towards fulfilling the vows they keep on making". He then said that the inmates had believed everything the government has told them, and that they have been accepting everything put forward by the government till now.

"The inmates do not want to carry out any act which violates laws and regulations. But then, the inmates can't stay without working towards securing our rights. The inmates in the jail have been convicted against the spirit of the currently enforced 'Green' Constitution" said the inmate.

Morewhere, the inmate said that though it had never been mentioned that the People's Majlis have a role to play in bringing convicts back to society, when the President's Special Envoy Ibrahim Hussain Zaki visited the jail and also during the Presidential Elections campaign, but that all the talk now is that the People's Majlis have a role to play.

He also said that the inmates were being forced to go on hunger-strike again as there seems to be no actions taken by the government, despite State Minister Shafeeg's reassurance that the promises shall be fulfilled.

Another man who spoke out information he received from inmates said that the inmates are willing to hold talks with the government, only with the presence of journalists, as the inmates say that have waited long enough for the government to bring "adequate changes and convenience within 3 or 4 weeks".

More and more inmates are joining in the protest, as the news spread through the facility. The hunger-strike is not expected to be wound up soon, unless 'light is found at the end of the tunnel' for the convicts.
