Police investigating alleged gang rape of two 16-year-olds

The Maldives Police are investigating the case of two 16-year-old girls who were raped by a group of around 25 men inside a house in Malé.

At a news briefing held at the Police Headquarters last Thursday, the Head of the Child and Family Protection Unit, Sub Inspector Mirufath Faiz said that the two girls had gone to M. Baansaage to meet with a boyfriend who wanted to tell them something. He said that the group of around 25 men had tricked the girls into taking a drug and then sexually abused them.

Mirufath said that the doctor, who had treated the two girls after the incident was reported to the Police, had said that both girls showed signs of being sexually abused. He said that three people had been arrested in connection to the case but two of them had been later released. The remaining suspect, 25-year-old Hussain Atheeq of M. Fehi Asseyri, had a previous criminal record for assault and battery, Police said.

Police are still looking for three other suspects, including a minor, involved in the incident.
