An LTU flight coming in for a landing at Male’ International Airport at Hulhule on Saturday flew into a flock of herons flying over the airport landing strip, killing several of the birds.
According to the Maldives Airports Company, the plane which was carrying German tourists to Maldives wasn’t damaged in the incident and all the passengers were safe.
“We don’t know for sure which part of the plane the birds had collided with,” an official from the Company said. “The officials at the Control Tower saw something and when they looked the herons were already lying dead on the runway.”
It isn’t usual for flock of birds to be flying over the runway airspace, the official said, but added that they had noticed there were relatively more birds during the ‘iruvai’ (North-East) monsoon.
