MDP Alliance calls on public to keep celebrations peaceful

Following their victory in the runoff election round of the presidential election held on 28 October, the MDP Alliance has called on its supporters to keep the celebrations peaceful and not to create discord.

The senior leaders of the Alliance made the plea while addressing the hundreds of supporters who gathered at the Lonuziyaaraikolhu area of Male’ early this morning to celebrate. Gasim Ibrahim, who competed against MDP candidate Mohamed Nasheed in the first round of the elections, asked the supporters to not to create disturbances, to obey the law and to keep the peace.

“Now is the time to dissolve animosities and create alliances to rebuild the country,” he said. “No one should try to disrupt the peace. I hope that everyone will comply with our wishes.”

Adhil Saleem, who had been recently fired from his job as a Managing Director of Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company, said that it was important to get the support of those who voted from Maumoon Abdul Gayoom in the rebuilding of the country.

“My message to them is for those who voted for Maumoon to join us in rebuilding our nation,” Adhil said. “Now is the time for unity.”

Several of the leaders of the other parties in the MDP Alliance also spoke during the celebrations. The celebrations had begun shortly after the provisional results of the runoff elections were announced, showing that the MDP’s presidential candidate Mohamed Nasheed (Anni) has emerged the winner by clear majority.
