Two brothers seriously wounded in gang attack

A group of people armed with swords and axes attacked and seriously injured two brothers in Male’ on Sunday night. The brothers who were injured in the attack were 13 and 16 years of age.

The attack occurred near Ranbaa Restaurant around 7:00pm and a group of around eight people on motorcycles attacked the two brothers, leaving them bloody and beaten. One of the brothers had suffered severe cuts and wounds to his head and body. The other had suffered serious injuries to his back and shoulder area. Both were taken to the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital for treatment following the attack.

According to an eyewitness who requested anonymity, the motorcycle group had arrived armed with swords, axes and other weapons to fight with the group near Ranbaa Restaurant. The unarmed group near Ranbaa had seen the attackers coming towards them and had tried to escape but the motorcycle gang had managed to catch two of them. According to a woman who saw the attack, after the incident the attackers had escaped leaving behind some of the weapons that they had used.

A Maldives Police Service media official said that they had not yet been able to find out the reason for the attack. He said that they had however arrested four suspects who were believed to have been involved in the attack and that investigations were ongoing.
