A tourist shop in a busy shopping area in Male' has collapsed yesterday morning injuring a woman and 3 men. The famous Bamboo shop near Reef Side and STO Electronics with 2 million rufiyaa worth goods suddenly collapsed during the busy hours of morning. Police and National Defense Force personnel rushed to the site to salvage any persons trapped in the fallen building. They were assisted by several persons who happened to be in the area during the time of the incident. Fortunately 4 people who were inside the shop were rescued without any delay and they were rushed to the Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital. According to Asst Director General Dr. Ibrahim Yasir, these four people sustained minor injuries and they will be discharged soon. There was a foreigner among them.
The two storey building collapsed as a result of excavating the site of adjoining Misraab shop where a new building was to be constructed. Most of the collapsed shop fell into the excavated 6 feet trench and debris were smashed to the main road. According to Ibrahim Shareef, owner of Bamboo shop, they had a near escape and they sustained some injuries. The collapsed shop was insured. The fallen shop was not a very strong structure, but eyewitnesses pointed out the building had fallen due to the way the ground in the adjoining site was excavated.
Concerned authorities have issued regulations governing methods to be applied for constructing new buildings. They have pointed many irregularities and violations in some of the sites where new buildings are constructed. There have been fatal accidents due to violations of building code and regulations mainly involving construction workers. Stringent construction safety measures have been introduced, but irregularities and violations is a common occurrence in the ever increasing construction works. According to informed sources, the authorities are conducting a full investigation of the incident.
