Five expatriates injured, six arrested in connection to disturbances in two islands

In two separate incidents in two islands, five expatriate workers were injured and six men were arrested by the Police in connection to the incidents.

A Police official said on Sunday that some residents of Shaviyani atoll Milandhoo had attacked some expatriate workers in the island, beating them up severely. Five residents from the island were arrested in connection to the incident, the official said.

The Official said that those who had been arrested for beating up the four expatriate workers who were working on a mosque project at the island were Hussain Jameel, 19, of Sunlight; Ali Jameel, 18, of Sunlight; Ali Faiz, 20, of Roseland; Mohamed Ashraf, 21, of Moonlight; and Ismail Fathuhee, 20, of Florin.

Police said that three Bangladeshis and one Indian man were injured in the fight and that all of them were working for United Builders who were contracted to the mosque project. One of them had suffered critical injuries and has been admitted at the Milandhoo Hospital, a Police official said.

The official said that in addition to beating up the expatriates, the four that had been arrested in connection to the incident had also vandalized the house where the expatriates were staying. They had broken down doors and locks and some of the fans and other equipment in the house, the official said. Police said that they were not sure what had prompted the violence.

Police also said that a man had attacked and severely injured a Bangladeshi man last Friday in Male’ atoll Gulhee.

The Island Chief of Gulhee, Hussain Shujau, said that the Bangladeshi man had been severely wounded in the attack. Shujau said that the man had attacked the Bangladeshi man because the expatriate had accused the resident of eating while fasting. Ahmed Visham, 24, of Mala, had been arrested in connection to the attack.

Shujau said that the expatriate had been hit repeatedly with a piece of wood and had suffered severe injuries to his face and eyes. He also said that the Bangladeshi man had been given treatment at the Gulhee Health Centre and then transferred to Male’ for further treatment.
