An eight-year-old girl who was sleeping in the same room as her mother was allegedly raped by a 28-year-old local man, according to the girl’s mother, speaking to Minivan News today.
Police confirmed they received a report that on Saturday night a man broke into the house in Alifu Alifu atoll Thoddoo, and allegedly raped the child. The man was arrested on Sunday afternoon and is now in police custody.
“This is not only a child abuse case,” said Ahmed Kara, head of the island health centre. “There are a lot of stories [about him] but no one reported. What he’s doing is that after people are sleeping he goes in the room.”
Kara said there were rumours on the island about a man who allegedly broke into people's homes at night and molested, and possibly raped women.
Responding to why no one had reported him before, Kara said because it was believed that most of the victims were the man's relatives.
According Madiah Ibrahim, a nurse who examined the girl when she was brought in to the health centre, there were no signs that the girl had been raped, based on an external examination.
The health centre does not have a gynaecologist, said Madiah, so they were unable to confirm the results. She said that they recommended to the mother that she bring her daughter to a gynaecologist.
The girl’s mother said that a doctor told her that her daughter had been raped.
She said she woke up on Saturday night when the man lay down next to her. She chased him out of the house and the next day filed a police report.
She said her daughter was “pretty sick now…she has a fever and headache, and can’t be alone.”
Kara said that the man is known on the island for being “mentally impaired”, but the girl’s mother said she does not believe that he is mentally disturbed.
The case is under investigation.
