Baby at Kudakudhinge Hiya died of natural causes – health ministry

Ministry of Health and Family have revealed that the 4 month old baby that passed away at Kudakudhinge Hiya, the children’s orphanage, in Kaafu atoll Villingili died of natural causes.

Speaking a news conference at Dharubaaruge, Deputy Health Minister Maria Ali said that the 4 month baby suffers from holes in hear and lungs. She said the baby died during her sleep after she was bottle fed yesterday morning.

“The baby died of natural causes, when the baby was brought under our care it had holes in the heart and lungs” Maria said.

Deputy Minister said according to the Dr. Robert Jones who examined the baby at Vilimale’ Hospital, the baby died almost 2 hours before it was brought to the hospital. The baby was taken to hospital around 1030 am.

Director at Department of Gender and Family Protection services Fathimath Yumna said that mother of the 4 moth baby, brought to Male’ on the 27 May, was a 16 year old and that the baby was brought to children’s orphanage in Vilingili as the family was unable to provide adequate support and care, in light of the fact that the baby had holes in its hear and lungs at birth.

“The baby was brought under our care due to the reports from S. Hithadhoo Children’s Services Center that family was not providing adequate support and care, and that baby was being taken care of by another family and that the family had the baby for 2 days, when we brought the baby it was already sick, doctors had advised to seek overseas medical attentions for the baby, since then we have been working on taking the baby out, and tomorrow (today) was the day the baby was scheduled to be taken out” Yumna said.
Yumna revealed that 16 year old mother was gang raped in 2006 and that the mother had never attended any school.

“She has previous record of drug offenses, and has a history of drug abuse, after birth her attitude and ways did not change, we have tried our best to get her to change her ways” Yumna said.

Yumna further said the only family the mother of the 4 month baby has is the grandmother who herself is pregnant out of wedlock. Yumna also said 2 out of 6 children of the grandmother are illegitimate.
