An expatriate worker who fell from the top of a seven storey building being demolished has died.
The Indian man who died on Wednesday afternoon had been breaking down a wall next to an empty elevator shaft when he had slipped and fallen down. Another expatriate worker who had been working with him said that the man had slipped and fallen onto the pile of rocks below.
“I heard a loud scream and looked around to find the man lying on the pile of rocks below,” he said. “He had hit his head on the rocks and died instantly. He didn’t even appear to have any other injuries on him.” He further said that they were not wearing any helmets or other safety equipment while working.
Police had refused reporters entry into the building on the request of the owners of the building.
The man who had fallen had immediately been taken to the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital.
Police said that the incident was being investigated by the Serious and Organized Crimes Unit of the Maldives Police Service and refused to reveal the identity of the dead man or the circumstances that had let to his death, citing that the case was still under investigation.
