More than 400 Bangladesh workers on Saturday evening converged at Artificial Beach and held a demonstration calling on the government to expedite their deportation.
One of the demonstrators told Miadhu Daily, that they remaining in hiding handed themselves over to the government, as the government promised to send then back to their native country. He said they had given up their jobs in order to hand themselves over to government authorities and long delays in the deportation means huge loses. He also said they had no money to eat as they no longer work and called on the government to send them back to their without delay as promised.
When asked whether any country in the world permitted foreigners to engage in work in violation of that country’s Immigration and Labor authorities regulations and why had they worked in violation of the countries regulations, the Bangalsedshi worker said “previously this wasn’t a problem, they used to take us in, and they will release us without any charge, big companies pay less, if work on our own we get more money, so we escape”.
A second worker who was in hiding but now under government authorities explaining the reasons why he went in hiding said he was forced go in to hiding as his employer declined to pay his salary, stipend and accommodation. He said he took the matter to Labor ministry on several occasions but no action was taken.
The crowd finally fled, when they saw police vehicles approaching, as they walked past Hulhumale’ Ferry Terminal. However some were taken in.
A person who witnessed the protest closely told Miadhu Daily that when the Bangladeshi workers were at the Artificial Beach, a group of Maldivians had encouraged them to proceed to Republican Square and had provided advice and instructions on how to go about it.
