Five jail guards of Department of Penitentiary and Rehabilitation Services (DPRS) have been expelled from job as they sold mobile phones to inmates in Maafushee Jail.
A very reliable source informed Jazeera that those expelled from job on the 11th of this month belongs to “Prisonal management department” of DPRS.
“We found the phones when we searched the blocks. Inmates said that those on duty sold it to them. When the officers asked them to tell at least the name of one of them, they told us of one guard who sold them phones. They knew his name as the name tag is attached on uniform. At first, the DPRS officers did not believed it. But further investigation revealed that these particular guards sold them phones. They later confessed” the source said
According to the source, those expelled from job were Mohamed Nazif, Abdullah Shifau, Mohamed Shaarif, Hussain Yasir and Ahmed Naushad.
The source also said that these guards hid the phones under their socks when they went to duty on the 4th of this month and sold them for Rf 250 and Rf 300 and more than 40 mobile phones were confiscated when the blocks were searched.
Regarding the matter, interim in charge of DPRS, Hussain Rasheed Yoosuf said that no such thing has happened since he took charge of the place.
